Beyond the price tag
What makes a domain premium?
A premium label starts a conversation. The useful question is what the exact name is worth to the project that will use it.
Translate appeal into a use case
A short name, a clear phrase, or an easily spoken brand can be attractive for different reasons. Begin with the use you have in mind: a company identity, a publication, a campaign, or a product. Consider whether the domain helps people remember the name and return to the right destination.
Separate the qualities you can observe from the outcomes you hope to achieve. You can test spelling and pronunciation. You cannot infer future sales or search performance from an asking price.
Evaluate the full address
Read the words and extension together. Check plural forms, ambiguous spelling, and the way the domain looks in lowercase. Try it in a spoken introduction and an email address. If a listener repeatedly writes down a different address, consider how much explanation your business is willing to carry.
Give alternatives an honest comparison
Compare the preferred domain with two or three credible options. Include a different wording, a longer but clearer address, or another extension when it suits your audience. A shortlist makes the premium visible: you can describe what the more expensive name changes and what it leaves unchanged.
Understand the evidence behind the number
Completed sales can provide context when the name, extension, buyer type, and timing are meaningfully comparable. Advertised prices tell you what a seller is asking. Automated estimates are inputs to investigate. None of these should replace the budget and business case for your own purchase.
The seller’s asking price, your maximum purchase price, and the name’s value to your project may be three different numbers. Keep them separate during a negotiation.
Include the cost of keeping the name
Confirm the exact renewal terms, possible premium renewal treatment, transaction costs, and account requirements. Keep the longer-term registration budget alongside the acquisition budget. A name needs to remain affordable after the launch announcement.
